By the early nineteenth century, Don Quixote had become a staple of English publishing, with affordable illustrated editions issued to meet growing demand among middle-class readers. The 1833 edition printed in London by Jones & Co., under their “Temple of the Muses” imprint, reflects this surge of interest. Produced in two volumes and often accompanied by engraved plates, sometimes after designs by celebrated artists such as George Cruikshank, these editions brought Cervantes’ classic adventures of the errant knight and his squire Sancho Panza to a wide Victorian audience, combining literary significance with the period’s enthusiasm for finely illustrated books.
